The Passing of former player Ron Saunders
36 goals for The Angels in 1956-57
Sad news has reached the club of the passing of Ron Saunders at age 87. He played for the Angels as a forward in the 1950’s scoring 39 goals in 53 appearances during season 1956-57 - a prolific rate by any standards.
Of course as most know, Ron went on to have a very successful football career at the very highest level. He served Portsmouth as a player but went on to have arguably an even better career in management. He led Aston Villa to a Football League title in 1980-81, the equivalent of today’s Premier League title and also managed Villa’s great rivals Birmingham City.
