Walking Footballers in last summer tournament
Preparation for the new season ends with semi-final place
On Wednesday we took two teams to play in the last summer tournament of the season at Eastbourne United. It took place in torrential rain and gale force winds but despite that we had a successful outing.
Our Greens Team were in Group A and competed against teams from Eastbourne, Scotland, Norway and Hastings coming away with two wins and three draws to top the group.
The Blues Team played teams from Cove, Bexhill, Worthing, Eastbourne and Norway. Despite two wins and two draws they finished fourth in the group and were unable to progress to the semi-finals.
The Greens met eventual tournament winners Worthing in the semi-finals. We had a lot of possession but were against a goalkeeper playing the game of his life and a 0-0 draw meant penalties. Club Director Mark Cornish, having produced two "wonder saves" during the game, managed another one from Worthing’s first penalty but eventually we lost 2-1.
This was great run out ahead of the new season. It was an Over-50’s tournament but the majority of our teams were from the Over-60’s group and we also welcomed new players into the tournament for them to gain experience.
The new Kent League season starts this month with the Over-50’s starting their campaign at home to Chatham on Saturday, 13th September with a 9.30am kick-off at the Yeomans Community Stadium. On the same day, the Over-60's Blues are at Maidstone YMCA to play our old rivals, Maidstone United, with a 9am kick-off. Entry is free to both games. We have four Mens' teams this season and will keep everyone updated with fixtures as they are arranged.
We also have our Community sessions at Longmead on Thursday's, 3.30pm-5pm. All are welcome, so come along and join us with both men and women of all abilities welcomed.
