Angels will be looking to reverse that away 2-1 defeat as they welcome Chippenham Town for their first ever visit to The Halcyon Wealth Longmead Stadium, Saturday 4th January, the second of three teams in National League South who are new visitors to to the ground this season. (The others are Hemel Hempstead Town and Hungerford Town).
Chippenham perhaps first came to the attention of Kent football fans when they reached the 2000 FA Vase final, the last at the old Wembley, where they faced Deal Town. Deal, managed by former Tonbridge boss Tommy Sampson, won 1-0 with another ex Angel Roly Graham scoring the winner.
This is Chippenham's third season at step two after winning automatic promotion from the Southern League in 2017. Last season they finished 13th and this year, going into the New Years Day fixtures, they were three points above us in 18th place with five wins, eight draws and nine defeats. Their games tend to be a little lower scoring than ours. Taking Wednesday aside they've scored seven fewer goals than us, but have conceded 13 fewer goals than us. Their goal tally of 21 is only better than Eastbourne whereas their goals-against tally of 27 is better than Dorking and Concord, who are both in the promotion mix.
Chippenham had a good start to the season which not only saw them go from early September to November without losing in league or cup football but also saw them reach the FA Cup first round against Northampton Town, which they lost 3-0. However they won just one of the next nine games and were desperate to end that run at home to Bath on New Years Day.
Chippenham's sole away win this season came at Concord in October although they won at Slough in the FA Cup and at Whyteleafe in the FA Trophy. Their four home wins have come against Billericay, Weymouth, Chelmsford and us in September.
It can’t have escaped most people’s attention that the Angels currently sit one off the bottom of the National South League Table so that really need to start putting regular points on the board and quickly. This game represents an ideal opportunity to do just that so please do come down to the Halcyon Wealth Longmead Stadium and cheer on your local football club to those three points.
