Final day farewells vs Cheshunt
Tonbridge Angels hosted already relegated side Cheshunt on the final day of the season. The Angels started the day with the possibility of finishing a record-high eighth in the league.
Two changes for the Angels saw Joe Turner and Lewis Gard return after Tuesday night’s triumph at Farnborough.
Jack Wood energised the fans with an early chance, dribbling into the Cheshunt box, dummying a shot and quickly firing the trigger, only for it to be blocked and fall behind for a corner. The resulting corner dropped to Ben Swift who swivelled with the ball and thumped an effort which was well saved by Desbois.
Cheshunt threatened taking the lead against the run of play on the twenty-fifth minute courtesy of full-back Pitblado delivering an inviting cross which was only just missed by both stretching forwards.
It’s fair to say that Tonbridge enjoyed possession throughout the game and created numerous chances, but this didn’t feel like a high scoring game. Top-scorer Jordan Greenidge was unsurprisingly involved and finally, on the stroke of half time, he utilised a Lewis Gard ball wrestling past multiple defenders and finishing to put the Angels one ahead.
The second half was more of the same, Angels in control but neither team playing at a high intensity. With nothing to really play for, the game lacked explosiveness.
Without a goal in the second half, the most memorable moment was the farewell applause for Tonbridge’s departing Captain and highest capped player Sonny Miles. Thank you, Sonny, for your service to the club.
We also waved goodbye to departing Chairman, Dave Netherstreet. No doubt we will see Dave at Longmead in the coming seasons, but we must say deep thank you and farewell.
Overall, it’s been a successful season, the Angles sniffing around the playoffs, narrowly missing out but finishing ninth in the league with 70 points.
Jay Saunders said after the game “This year felt like one of adjustment for the club. We’ll work hard in the summer and come back next season to fight again.”
