Chesham United Preview
On Tuesday evening, much to the relief of our travelling supporters, we make a last journey of the season through the Dartford Tunnel to visit for the first time, Chesham United.
It’s fair to say that journeys into Essex and beyond have brought many trials and tribulations this term and that is without taking into account results that might not have gone our way.
Chesham are playing at step two for the first time in their history having won the Southern League Premier Division South last season by a country mile. They've adapted very well to life in National League South, sitting 16th in the table after Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at table-topping Worthing, but are healthily clear of any relegation threat. Earlier this season they reached the FA Cup First Round, earning a televised tie against Lincoln City, which they lost 4-0.
James Duncan and Michael Murray's side have had a satisfactory, if not impregnable, campaign at The Meadow winning seven and losing eight of their 18 National League South games.
Duncan and Murray are in their sixth season at Chesham having been appointed joint managers in 2018. Duncan, a player at Wealdstone and Slough Town and formerly the manager of Potters Bar Town, where he won promotion to the Isthmian Premier Division in 2018, whilst Murray was a player coach of that successful side.
Much like ourselves, Chesham have found points fairly hard to come by since the turn of the year, but have done enough to keep themselves clear of any trouble. Following a pre-Christmas drubbing from Dorking Wanderers at The Meadow, they entered the new year with impressive wins against Hemel Hempstead Town and Maidstone United but since then have only recorded a single home win against Weymouth.
Leading goalscorer is the experienced Nathan Minhas, with 11 League and Cup goals this season. Minhas joined at the beginning of the season after an excellent 2023/24 with Slough Town in which he scored 17 times. Alongside him is likely to be Mitchell Weiss, who you may remember playing against us for St Albans City, and in midfield Matt Lench, is also ex-Slough and Omar Rowe, the brother of Gillingham's Aaron Rowe.
In goal, they've just had Dillon Addai recalled by parent club Millwall. Ben Goode played in goal against Worthing on Saturday.
The reverse fixture in December brought a narrow win for the Angels courtesy of a 17th minute goal from Trevan Robinson. But it took a player of the match performance from Matt Rowley to preserve the points as Chesham mounted a second half onslaught on the Angels goal.
The Meadow has a capacity of 5,000 with a main stand that has around 300 seats whilst there is covered standing on each of the other three sides. The club bar, The Chess Suite, is available to both sets of supporters with a food outlet and tea bar.
There is free parking at the ground but, if full, there is alternative parking on a gravel hardstanding area at The Moor. There is on-street parking, but this is residential so due consideration should be given to residents.
Chesham is part of the London Underground network and is at the far west of the Metropolitan Line. Leave the station and head down Station Road towards the High Street. Turn left and walk through the town until you reach a pedestrian crossing (opposite the Red Lion). Cross the road and bear left by the pub and continue walking until you pass two petrol stations which are opposite each other. At the next roundabout the third exit takes you into Chesham United’s ground. The walk from the station takes 5-10 minutes.
Admission to the game is Adults £15, Concessions £12, 18-23 years £10, Under-18’s £5 and Under-12’s Free. Tickets are available in advance HERE. Entry via the turnstile can be made with cash or card.
Due to local authority licensing conditions, drums and other musical instruments are not permitted in the ground.
Enjoy the game!
