Chesham United Preview

We welcome Chesham United to the Halcyon Wealth Longmead Stadium on Tuesday for the first time, the only club we are playing in the National League South this season we have never played before.

Jay Saunders will be looking for his squad to build on Saturday’s 2-1 win over Aveley having suffered a disappointing reverse last Tuesday. He reflected on Chesham’s visit after Saturday's game: “Chesham are a good side, a big side, organised with loads of experienced players at this level who can hurt you, so it’s going to be a really tough game. But, I keep saying it, there are no easy games at this level. Every team, wherever they are in the league, have good individual players who can hurt you and Chesham are having a great season, including a good cup run, so it will certainly be an interesting game but, hopefully, we can get back to what we are normally like on a Tuesday night at Longmead.”

Chesham are playing at step two for the first time in their history having won the Southern League Premier Division South last season by a country mile. They've adapted very well to life in National League South, sitting 14th in the table, three points behind the Angels, both having played 19 games. Earlier this season they reached the FA Cup First Round, earning a televised tie against Lincoln City, which they lost 4-0.

James Duncan and Michael Murray's side have won eight league games, including four away at St Albans, Welling, Salisbury and Enfield Town.  However, as injuries and suspensions have begun to bite, Chesham have dipped slightly this month with three successive defeats in the league and cup, conceding three each time.

Duncan and Murray are in their sixth season at the Meadow having been appointed joint managers in 2018. Duncan, a player at Wealdstone and Slough and formerly the manager of Potters Bar, where he won promotion to the Isthmian Premier Division in 2018, whilst Murray was a player coach of that successful side.

Following Saturday's 3-0 defeat at Boreham Wood, Murray looked forward to Tuesday’s visit to Longmead saying: “We have to regroup, go again, and prepare right. We have to put a performance in and get a result. My interviews are becoming boring, I just say it's a tough game. We're having a tough spell but we have to make sure we're all in it together."

Expected to feature in Chesham's team on Tuesday evening will be Connor Stevens, a centre back who arrived in the summer from Barnet. He was previously with Boreham Wood where he featured in the FA Cup against Bournemouth and Everton. He was in the Wealdstone side which won National League South in 2020 and is a goalscoring threat, grabbing his fifth of the season against Salisbury last Tuesday.

Omar Rowe, arrived this season from Hayes and Yeading having had a loan spell two years ago from Farnborough. He has also played for Hemel Hempstead Town and Bishop's Stortford as well as a spell earlier in his career in Cyprus.

Mitchell Weiss joined this season after four years at St Albans City, where last season he amassed 14 goals and 12 assists and finally, Nathan Minhas is Chesham's leading scorer this season with nine league and cup goals after scoring 17 for Slough Town last year.
