Hemel Hempstead Preview

Season ticket holders might like to rummage in their TicketCo wallet and find their QR code, ready for zapping on a Saturday afternoon for the first time in nine weeks when we entertain Hemel Hempstead Town.

Both teams will be looking for a return to the top of their form, having both suffered exits from the FA Trophy last Saturday. Whilst the Angels were succumbing to a late goal at Gosport Borough, Hemel fell to defeat at Aveley.

Hemel Hempstead's season so far is the season of two halves. They have 22 points, 20 of them won by the first week in September. Their first eight games were six wins and two draws, a run which saw them top the table. Their next game saw a draw at home to Farnborough and have taken one point from the nine games since, and go into today's game on the back of six losses league and cup,  having not scored in their last three league matches.

Hemel’s most familiar names are one of the league's most regular scorers of the last few years Joe Iaciofano; Ricardo German, who has scored six goals this season; ex-Dartford winger Brandon Barzey who returns from international duty with Montserrat and former Angel Manny Maja, who is on loan from Aldershot.

Prior to our promotion in 2019, we had never played Hemel in a competitive game, and in the five seasons we've shared at step two, we have not beaten Hemel, home or away.  Last season the home game ended 3-3.  It was Sean Shields' debut, and he found the net, as did Jordan Greenidge and Lewis Gard with a late penalty, Greenidge ending the game early having received a red card for a second booking. Hemel's goals were scored by Bayley Brown, George Williams and Josh Williams.  In the away game, on a cold Saturday in January, Hemel won 2-0 with goals early in the second half from Josh Hill and Michael Folivi.

The Angels go into the game, having slipped mainly due to lack of involvement in National League South, in 16th place but also with an unbeaten record at home in the League. Sean Shields, who missed last Saturday’s game through illness is in line to make his 50th appearance for the club and supporters who didn’t make the trip to Gosport have the opportunity to welcome the return of Charlie Pegrum, who is on loan from Leyton Orient. Joe Tyrie, has gone out on dual registration with Sheppey United.

Definitely missing will be Noel Leighton who looks set for an operation on his ankle. Jay Saunders said: “It’s not ideal and I feel for the lad. Unfortunately sometimes that’s how football goes. It’s been a blow, we’ve not been able to see the best of him, we not been able to get him fully fit. Noel said to me, “I’m just so annoyed because I know what I can do and I just can’t show it”.”

On reinforcements, Jay told Kent Online: I want to bring two in but they have got to be the right ones and its got to suit us financially as well. It is tricky because every manager you speak to at the moment is looking for a forward. Sometimes you are competing against other offers where it could be for more money or full-time.”

On the visit of of Hemel Hempstead, Jay added: “Bobby Wilkinson’s sides are normally direct, they work their socks off and we’ve got to be prepared for that. If you look at the table, we’ve got three or four games in hand on most teams and if we pick up good points, you’re in a strong position. I think it’s the best start the club’s had in National South but you lose a couple of games and it’s doom and gloom. But we’ve got games in hand, we’ve got players to come back, and we’ll get players in, so I’m OK with where we’re at. We need to add in that forward area and that will make a real difference to us.”

Admission prices to the game are: Adults £17; Concessions £14; Youths £7 and Under-12’s free with accompanying adult with tickets available HERE

Gates open at 13.00pm with the Sports Bar and Marquee Bar open from the outset.
