Welling United Preview

As much as our supporters celebrated a long-awaited away victory on Saturday at Enfield Town, the win would also have been also cheered in south London as Welling United’s hard-earned point at Chippenham Town lifted them, albeit only on goal difference, out of the relegation places.

It is beginning to look like one of St Albans City, Enfield Town or Welling United, our visitors on Tuesday evening, will escape the drop but the struggle is so tight it would be a brave person predict who that might be.

Welling come to the Halcyon Wealth Longmead Stadium with a couple of draws in their last five games, but also in the knowledge that their visits have been fruitful in the last couple of seasons having won successively by a single goal each time with our last win over the Wings coming in April 2022 courtesy of a Tommy Wood goal.

Welling are an established National League South club, now playing their ninth consecutive season in this league, having been relegated after two years in the top division of non-league football in 2015. In 2018/19 they reached the play-offs, but since the Covid seasons, they have finished in the bottom half of the table.

Unsurprisingly, due to the close distance between the clubs, there could be a few players facing their former club on Tuesday evening. Crossley Lema and Taylor Maloney are ex-Wings while Teddy Perkins and Garrett Kelly have represented the Angels.

Their manager is Rod Stringer, who marked a year as Welling United manager last month (taking over from Danny Bloor) and took a relegation-threatened side on a run which saw them lose just two of their last 18 games to finish 17th. Stringer has plenty of non-league honours as a manager, winning the Isthmian North title with Aveley in 2009; taking Braintree Town into the National League in 2011 and turning Chelmsford City into a club who were regulars in the play-offs.

In February, the manager brought four players from promotion chasing Eastbourne Borough to the club in Dan Quick, James Alabi, Jayden Davis and Finn Ballard-McBride.

But perhaps the best known name in the Welling squad is Dave Winfield. Now 36, he was in the Aldershot side which won promotion to the Football League in 2008, and spent the next eight years in the EFL including time at Wycombe Wanderers, Shrewsbury Town, AFC Wimbledon and York City. He scored Welling's goal against Chippenham on Saturday.
