Weston-super-Mare Preview
On Saturday, Weston-super-Mare come to the Yeomans Community Stadium as National League South leaders. Their 5-1 win over Slough Town on Tuesday night meant they overtook Hornchurch at the top of the table with 28 points from their 12 games and lead the table by a single goal with their only defeat since the opening day of the season coming at AFC Totton.
It is perhaps not surprising that the impressive football of Weston in recent years earned manager Scott Bartlett a move to National League Eastleigh in September and has been replaced by Bartlett's assistant Scott Rogers. Before moving to Weston he had been manager at Tiverton Town and before that, Willand Rovers. As a player he once scored the winning goal in the FA Vase final for Tiverton against Bedlington Terriers at the old Wembley.
This is Weston's third season in National League South after winning the Southern League Premier South. In their first season they finished a respectable 13th and last season they were in the play-off zone for much of the season before narrowly missing out on the end of season lottery to finish eighth, just one place away from the best season in their history.
Stars of the Weston-super-Mare side today include Louis Britton, who is one of the league's leading scorers with seven in league (ten in all competitions); Sam Pearson, who has been a prolific striker in this division for a couple of seasons (five league goals) and Luke Coulson, who has four in all competitions. Britton signed for the club in March. He started out at Bristol City, was a prolific marksman for Waterford and has also played for Maldon & Tiptree and Bristol Manor Farm. Sam Pearson, a Welsh Under-21 international, was in the Yeovil Town side which won promotion two seasons ago. He joined Weston in October 2024 and his former clubs include Bristol City, AFC Wimbledon and Inverness Caledonian Thistle. Coulson is a familiar name to Kent football fans following to his spells at Ebbsfleet United, Bromley and Dartford. He started his career at Manchester City and Cardiff City before moving to Weston where he got in excess of 20 goals and assists in his first season.
Last season’s corresponding fixture was the first home game of 2025 which the Angels won 2-0 with goals from Sean Shields and Ronnie Nelson. In the reverse fixture, we led 1-0 through a spectacular Taylor Maloney effort before the match was abandoned in the dying minutes due to a medical emergency in the crowd. We returned with an absentee-hit squad three days later for a hastily arranged rematch which brought a 3-0 defeat.
