Worthing Preview
On Saturday, we take the well-trodden path of recent years to Woodside Road, home to Worthing and, in all honesty, one that hasn’t borne much fruit and has been the venue of some memorable visits for all the wrong reasons.
Worthing last season reached the play-offs, losing to Maidstone United in the eliminator. The epic title race had ultimately seen Worthing finish fourth in National League South, a point adrift of champions Truro City.
This season, Worthing have made a reasonable start, presently sitting in tenth position, but only a point shy of the embryonic dotted line of seventh. Their home form has brought one win, 2-0 against Salisbury, after three successive draws against Bath City, Enfield Town and Maidstone United.
On Tuesday evening, like ourselves, Worthing made FA Cup progress following a replay win over Jersey Bulls by 5-0 after the initial tie was drawn 2-2 in the Channel Islands.
Ten different Worthing players have scored this season in league and cup, the most prolific being Temi Babalola who has seven in league and cup including a hat-trick in Tuesday night's FA Cup replay.
One of those ten is very familiar to Angels fans, Nicky Wheeler, now 34, who was with Tonbridge between 2015 and 2017. Other men in form in front of goal are Brad Dologhan and ex-Maidstone man Razzaq Coleman De-Graft with three. There is also a former Tonbridge loanee in the Worthing squad in Nathan Odokonyero, although he was not in the squad on Tuesday night.
For those supporters who are making their first visit to the West Sussex club here is what you can expect from the facilities.
As you enter the stadium, to the left, is the South Stand, below which is a well appointed bar which is accompanied by a further two outside bars. Opposite, is a full length of covered terracing that was opened for our visit in October of last year.
Behind the Woodside Road end, there is covered terracing whilst at the opposite end there is uncovered standing.
The stadium catering is housed in the corner between the Woodside Road terrace and the Main Stand, where the usual football menu has always been of a good standard.
Train travellers will have a gentle 10-15 minute stroll from Worthing Station whilst those arriving by car will find no supporter parking at the stadium. There is plenty of on-street parking within easy walking distance but please park considerately in what is exclusively a residential area.
As said in the opening couple of paragraphs, Lady Luck has never been on our side at Worthing, sadly we have to say we have never won there. Last season, goals from Nazir Bakrin and Trevan Robinson were not enough to collect any points with the winner, inevitably, coming from Wheeler.
Admission prices for the game are Adults: £18; Concessions: £14.00; Under-18’s: £8.00; Under-12’s: £6 accompanied by an adult and Under-5’s free. Tonbridge Angels supporters can buy their online tickets through the Away Fans section HERE. Payment on the turnstile will be cash or card. Gates will be open from 1pm.
Enjoy the game!
