Goalkeeping coach added to Jay's staff

Andy Smith

Andy Smith signs in for 2023/24

Tonbridge Angels are delighted to welcome Andy Smith as goalkeeping coach in Jay Saunders’ staff for the upcoming season.

Andy, who comes to the club following Mitchell Walker’s departure, had a playing career that started as an Academy player at Southampton before moving on to Dorking, Merstham, Banstead Athletic, Epsom & Ewell and South Park.

His coaching career started back at Banstead, who won a title with a record number of points. At Bracknell Town in 2021/22, he was part of the management team that saw the club win the Isthmian South Central with his goalkeepers earning 24 clean sheets and only conceding 12 goals. Last season he was in National League South with Dulwich Hamlet.

Andy spoke of his appointment: “When I left Dulwich, Tonbridge contacted me straightaway, along with a few other clubs, but the way they went about themselves in making contact and wanting my services it was a no brainer to join the Gaffa, Parky, and Blacky.

“After speaking to Lloyd on the phone he hooked me in straightaway with what the club want to achieve going forward. Tonbridge had a successful season last term and to be a part of the future really is an exciting time to be at the club.

“I'm looking forward to working with Jonny and the Academy goalkeepers and improving them. Jonny is easily one of the best keepers in the National League and my job is to make sure he's ready for every game.

“I’m really looking forward to getting started, meeting all the fans and other staff members.”
