Jay’s Friday Briefing

Jay Saunders June 2022

‘Important to get that first home win’

We may be down to the limit on squad numbers for the game against Dulwich but Jay Saunders is still confident going into the game.

After taking all our points away so far he knows the importance of getting that first win at home.

He said: “It’s important to get that first home win. The sooner we get it the better but I’m not saying it’s going to be easy. Dulwich are always a good side, I’ve known Gavin and Junior a long time and they’ve always got strong sides and will be looking to do well in the league. But we are at home and we’ve got to try and get the three points.

“You can’t make excuses, we haven’t trained on the pitch as much as we’d like and we’ll get used to it. You play on a lot of 3Gs these days so I’m not making excuses. We’ve conceded silly goals and left ourselves too much to do and at the other end we weren’t ruthless enough with the end product. It’s great facility and we’ve got to get the first three points.”

Luke Holness is lined up to be in the squad for the first time but otherwise with a number of players out injured and Tommie Fagg starting a ban Jay has decisions to make:

“We’re really stretched, everyone knows that. We’ve brought Luke in, he trained with us a few weeks back but at the time I couldn’t get it over the line. He’s been training with clubs in the league above and I’m pleased. He’s got a lot of ability, scored goals last season and he’s a good addition to the squad.

“We tried with a few others but it’s not materialised.

“On the two Charlton loanees, Jeremy’s is pretty much done now and Dylan’s waiting for a scan so that’ll be a minimum three to four weeks. James Taylor comes into contention if he has no reaction, which is good because we’ve missed him.”

We also asked whether he was considering bringing any players out at other clubs back for the game:

“Fyn’s been away on holiday so fitness wise he might not be there, and we could have called Mason back but for us to get the best out of him he needs to be at full fitness and he needs game time.”
