Jay’s Friday Briefing

Jay Saunders by David Couldridge 2022-23

“I expect a very different game to the one in August”

It's the second in a run of four home games for Tonbridge on Saturday, and confirmation that the game against Weymouth is on, with a 3pm kick off. Match tickets Here.

After wins and clean sheets in both the last two games, we look for a hat-trick of clean sheets for the first time since March 2019.

Jay Saunders joked: "I wish you hadn't told me that!  I've been clear that goals win you games and clean sheets win you leagues.  I said when I came in we've got to get more goals into the team.  Although we haven't got a player in double figures, we have shared the goals about which is good.  On the flip side maybe being more open has allowed us to do that.  It's a fine line in not being too defensive that we can't suddenly be an attacking threat.  We've got that balance right, we've kept two clean sheets, it gives the boys confidence.  But I think a run of having the same back four has helped that.  Over the season it's been constant changes but having a settled back four, or back five with Jonny, has helped that."

The game against bottom side Weymouth is the reverse fixture from the opening day of the season, when we won 3-1, although Weymouth have a number of new players, and a new manager, since that hot day in August.

Jay said: "Bobby Wilkinson's gone in there, someone who has managed at this level before and knows the league and players.  His sides are always hard to beat and well organised and that's what he's gone in and done.  He's signed another defender this week, they've had some decent results, they've beaten Welling and drew against Wimbledon in the cup.  It will be a completely different game, but for us it's about doing the right thing, we've done all the work we need, now it's up to the players to go out and carry that out."

"I don't expect any players back.  Faggy has started training, Ruben has started some running so we'll see if he has a reaction to that."
