Jonny to leave the Angels

Jonny

Legendary 'keeper to seek "a fresh challenge"

Long-serving, and fans favourite, Jonny Henly will be leaving the club after Saturday’s final game of the season at the Halcyon Wealth Longmead Stadium against St Albans.

Jonny said of his departure after seven seasons at Tonbridge Angels: “I’ve loved my time at Tonbridge Angels and want to thank all the fans for their amazing support over the years and that very special chant. I feel it’s now time for a fresh challenge and I want to leave the club on top after over 300 appearances. I will miss everyone and will always hold Tonbridge Angels close to my heart.”

Jonny joined the club in March of 2017 after the regular goalkeeper Anthony Di Bernardo suffered an injury in an ill-fated game against Needham Market and after playing in the final 11 games of the season, manager Steve McKimm decided that Henly would be his number one for the following season, Di Bernardo was released and the rest, as they say, is history.

304 appearances later (as of Saturday), Jonny ranks as the longest serving goalkeeper in the club’s history, and who’s not to say, the best?

Jonny, who represented Scotland at U19 and U21 levels, joined the club from Hemel Hempstead after beginning his career at Reading and quickly built up a great rapport with the Angels supporters, three times being voted as runner-up in the Supporters Player of the Year Award and was a member of the successful Super Play-off winning team of 2019.

Jay Saunders commented: “It’s been a real pleasure to work with Jonny, who is such a positive and big character around the place. He’s been an outstanding goalkeeper for Tonbridge Angels and we all wish him the very best for his future career.”

Chair, Sophie Purves added: “On behalf of everyone associated with the club, I would like to thank Jonny for his total dedication and commitment as Tonbridge Angels’ longest serving goalkeeper. Jonny will always remain a club legend and will always be very welcome here. I would also like to thank Jonny’s father, John Henly, and all his family for the fantastic support they have shown to the club over the years.”

Thank you, Jonny, for all your time at the club. We wish you nothing but the best of fortune for your career going forward.
