Top of the table clash looms for women walking footballers
Bromley win sets up Canterbury game
Tonbridge Angels Spiderettes, our women’s walking footballers, travelled to Bromley on Wednesday evening, looking to keep the pressure on Canterbury before their top-of-the-table clash this coming Monday.
Tonbridge started the brighter, taking an early lead when a quick-thinking Sherr Smith released the league's top scorer Sandra Donohoe through on goal. An emphatic finish put Tonbridge in the driving seat but an unfortunate mistake followed which allowed Bromley back into the game after only a few minutes of play.
A few minutes passed with Tonbridge once again dominating the play. A long passing sequence followed which saw Sherr Smith pick up the ball out wide, cutting in and unleashing another cracking finish into the top corner.
What must have seemed like déjà vu only a few minutes later, Bromley equalised in the exactly same fashion bringing the scores level at 2-2.
The Spiderettes didn’t seemed phased by conceding, once again playing on the front foot and restoring their lead when a smart pass sent Sarah Fraser who finished neatly from an angle.
Just before half time, Tonbridge put their foot firmly on the gas, Sandra Donohoe picked up on a loose pass and finished calmly to put Tonbridge 4-2 up at half-time.
The second half followed the pattern of the first, with Tonbridge starting the faster of the two teams. Sarah Fraser once again picked up on a loose pass from Bromley and finished from a tight angle to put the Angels 5-2 up.
Bromley started to creep back into the game and put Tonbridge under pressure from the front, picking up on a loose ball in the middle and finishing into the bottom corner to give them a glimmer of a comeback. But, just as Bromley thought they had got themselves back into the game, a build up play that any team would have been proud of, was finished off by Sarah Fraser to complete her hat-trick.
With five minutes to go, Sherr Smith put the icing on the cake with a cool finish from distance, the ball being cut back from the far right. Bromley had time to add one more goal into the mix, pouncing on a goalkeeper save to slot the ball into the net.
Tonbridge run out 7-4 winners in a wonderful advert for women’s walking football in Kent. Hat's off to Bromley who continued to play a good standard of football throughout.
Player of the match went to the hat-trick hero Sarah Fraser. The win moves Tonbridge to within two points of Canterbury who sit at the top of the table.
Don’t forget you can see our women in their top-of-the-table clash on Monday, 3rd February, 7.15pm kick off at Longmead Stadium. Please come along and support and it won’t cost you a penny!
