Seasons 1957/58, 1958/59 and special book offer which looks at the first 10 years of Angels history

Another action packed couple of seasons to remember as we conclude the first 10 years in the history of Tonbridge Angels.  Two memorable matches are featured - a 5-3 win against title-elect Yeovil Town in 1957/58, and and an extraordinary 6-5 win in a cup replay against Bexleyheath and Welling.  1958/59 saw preparation for a league restructuring (yes they had them in those days as well) and Angels needing to finish in 11th place or better to qualify for the new Southern League Premier Division.  Well we finished guess where,  11th spot, which was secured in the final game.  Well its been a bit of a tradition that we like to keep the excitement going and never do things the easy way!

There is an interesting reference in the 1957/58 season to 'the dreadful influenza epidemic' and that 'three players were borrowed' for the visit of Hastings'.  Yours truly can just about remember when at school, classrooms almost empty with so many children off sick.

After the next edition, editor Wink Tomkinson intends to bind the 120 pages which will have been published by then into a soft cover book.  If only five people commit to purchase then the price will be £10.00 per copy but 10 people would bring the price down to £8.00.  Please contact wink.tomkinson@tonbridgeangels.co.uk to secure your copy which in time may well become something of a collectors item.

As ever, sincere thanks must go to the late Brian Cheal who wrote much of the copy, editor and designer Wink Tomkinson, and Dan Couldridge for providing the stats.
