Walking Angels Blues

Snow joke for our Angels

On a bleak Wednesday night, with heavy snow falling the Angels Over-60’s Blues made the journey to Gillingham to play Anchorians. The fact the game went ahead was a surprise with heavy snowfall, freezing conditions and the ball resembling a snowball at times.

Angels started well, pressing hard and, inside a couple of minutes, a slip in the Anchorians defence allowed Martin Brindley to fire home. The pace of the ball and the conditions had been highlighted before the game and the team had listened, playing short balls to players demanding the ball. It remained 1-0 until half-time with Tonbridge dominating possession.

With conditions continuing to deteriorate, the second half got underway with the Angels Blues playing the same tactics. With 10 minutes to go Anchorians upped the pace and began to attack. This left gaps at the back and a fast break allowed Steve Elliott to fire home and with the game in its final moments a foul by the Anchorians goalkeeper in coming out of his area (he couldn’t see the lines!) left Nigel Bragg with the chance to make it 3-0 from the spot. He made up for not scoring in the previous game by blasting the ball high into the net.

A very solid performance by the Angels using their skills to manage the conditions far better than Anchorians.

This win takes the Angels to the top of the league and confirms qualification for the second phase of the competition. Just one more game for the Angels Blues but Bexley, with games in hand, are chasing for the title.
