Kent Youth League Round-up
A look back at last Sunday's KYL games
Apologies for the late posting of the summary of last Sunday’s Kent Youth League results, but despite the Under-16’s losing for the first time, we still had two positive results. The Under-13’s had no KYL fixtures.
The U16’s travelled to Fisher, in east London, with a early morning start as Adam Barden reports:
“The U16’s travelled to Fisher this weekend with an early morning drive and 10am kick-off, it wasn’t ideal for the boys and for 30 minutes we didn’t get started and found ourselves a goal down.
“But we were delighted with the reaction going a goal behind. The lads were brilliant and dominated the game but were unable to find an equaliser before half time.
“Into the second half and the boys continued to dominate, piling the pressure onto the very deep and compact Fisher back line. We created chances but the defending from Fisher was top quality with their goalkeeper outstanding, As the keeper made save after save, frustration grew and, with four players returning from injury, fitness started to show as our decision making started to drop and we were unable to find the necessary goal to continue our participation in the League Cup.”
The midday kick-off at the Yeomans Community Stadium saw the U15’s triumph with a nap hand as James Ward reports:
“Another strong performance from the boys last weekend saw us secure a well deserved result against a disciplined and well organised Whitstable side.
“Despite their defensive setup, we dominated from start to finish and maintained control throughout the match.
“It was particularly encouraging to see new signings JJ Nzuzi and Owen Bentley both get on the scoresheet with two goals each with Dexter Clarke adding the other goal.Their impact was immediate and reflects the quality they bring to the squad.
“While we know tougher challenges lie ahead, we’re pleased with the professional manner in which the team approached the game and maintained their standards from the first whistle to the last.”
So the U14’s had a hard act to follow against Old Wilsonians, but match it they did as Oliver Stell reports:
“The U14’s continued their fine form last weekend with a comfortable victory, running out 5-0 winners at home to Old Wilsonians. We started much faster than in the reverse fixture, going 1-0 up after 10 minutes. Dudley Whittington providing the last pass for Lewis Schembri to tap in at the back post, finally breaking the curse and scoring his first of the season. Tonbridge quickly made it 2-0, Whittington reacting first to a knock down from Tolfrey to snatch home his second of the season.
“Only a few minutes passed before Schembri was back in action, setting up Jack Murray to also score his second of the season and take the young Angels into the break three up.
“Despite the comfortable half-time lead, the Angels came out for the second half fired up with the objective of a clean sheet. Bourne wasn’t required to make a save in the Angels goal, but his long pass was taken down by Jack Barratt, who played a stunning through ball into the path of Schembri who raced away to grab his second of the game.
“On 65 minutes, with Schembri once again involved, Iden Newman dropped a shoulder to send the keeper the wrong way for the fourth before adding a fifth, calmly taking his chance from an acute angle.
"Supporters player of the match went to Iden Newman for a gutsy display, capped with a great goal. Man of the match went to Lewis Schembri for finding his form again with two assists and two goals.”
